Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a stall? $20 (per day) from Tuesday to Friday (3pm starts) and $50 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (12pm starts). Additionally, an initial one off payment of $20 is required for registration the first time a stall holder trades.
Is it easy to get a casual stall? As the market runs 6 nights a week, we rarely turn any stall holders away because we are full.
Can I sell anything? Preference will be given to locally made handcrafted goods. There are a few product restrictions please read points 5 and 10 of the "Trading Rules and Regulations". No more jewellery or sunglass stalls are accepted. No food or drink stalls at all are permitted.
How big are the stalls? We are situated in a prime location where space is limited therefore our stall sizes may be a bit smaller than you are used to. However, traders soon adapt with helpful suggestions from the regulars. The stall sizes do vary but most are around 2.8 metres by 1.5 metres.
Do you rent out tables and equipment? We do not, you must bring all your own tables and equipment. Please read point 6 of the "Trading Rules and Regulations".
Trading Rules and Regulations
As of: August 2010 The Market operates by the following rules for the benefit of all traders and to comply with Waverley Council regulations. All traders must fill out and sign the trader registration form, confirming that they agree to adhere to these rules and regulations before commencing trading. There is a one off $20 fee for registration.
1. Market Stall Costs A stall costs $20 (per day) from Tuesday to Friday (3pm starts) and $50 (per day) on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (12pm starts) and must be paid before trading can begin - please have the correct amount ready as change is not always available. There are no exceptions to this rule. No stall can be sold or sublet.
2. Trading Hours and Days Every Saturday, Sunday and all public holidays from midday to midnight. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 3pm to midnight. Traders and equipment are not permitted on site before the start of the market and must leave the stall site before midnight.
3. Unloading and Parking Under no circumstances is parking allowed at the back of the market. Unloading may only commence up to half-an-hour before the start of trading, and not before. Loading and unloading must be completed with all due haste or on the spot fines will be issued. Furthermore your site will not be allocated until your car is removed. Paid parking is available at the Bondi Beach Pavilion or the Swiss Grand Hotel on Curlewis Street. As of March 2009 anyone found parking at the back of the market will now be fined $30, loading/unloading is still allowed, but do not park there.
4. Stall Allocations To book a casual stall please phone the Daily Casual Stalls List (0415-449-362) after 10am only on the day you wish to trade. Calls received before 10am will not be added to the casuals list. Leave only your name after the tone, then press the hash (#) key before hanging up. Your call will not be returned. For questions and queries please send an email through the "contact us" page of this website. Stalls are only allocated by the BBCNM Manager on the day of trading. Casual stall sites are allocated as near as possible to the start of the day's trading, so please be present at this time. Arts and crafts take preference over imported/mass-produced goods, preference is also given to residents of the Waverley area and Indigenous Australians.
5 Restrictions No illegal copies are to be sold at the BBCNM. If you are selling goods with designer labels, you must show a receipt to prove that they are genuine. Only one stall per trader will be permitted. The BBCNM is not accepting any more jewellery products or sunglasses whatsoever. No trading is allowed outside of the market area or market trading times. The market area falls under an alcohol free zone. Under no circumstances is alcohol to be consumed by stall holders.
6. Presentation and equipment Requirements All of your equipment, stock etc must be within your allocated space at all time. The BBCNM has no equipment for hire - all traders must supply their own tables, racks, lights etc before they can trade. Presentation is very important as the market is located in a public place, please note: milk crates/bread trays, cardboard boxes etc are not permitted anywhere on the site. Please ensure that your stall is safely set up and not a hazard to passers by as you are personally responsible for your site, equipment etc; traders should have their own public liability insurance, but this is not required at present. Tables used in the market must be not higher than one metre tall and must be covered with a table cloth. Tall structures such as marquees and tents are limited due to the space restriction. It is recommended you do not set up your structure on your first trading day. Please check with the manager if you wish to use your structure on any subsequent days. Please bring emergency covering (i.e. plastic sheeting) for your stall in case of rain - there is no shelter available on the market site and market stalls are not permitted to shelter in front of the shops. There are no power points available, silent generators or deep-cycle batteries can be used.
7. Rubbish It is a council regulation that every stall holder must leave their site & surrounding area clean and clear of all rubbish on departure, this includes your cigarette butts if you are a smoker. No rubbish is to be put in private or business bins in the vicinity of the market. Council regulations require market stall holders to use recyclable or biodegradable packaging, polystyrene packaging or plastic bags are not allowed.
8. Permanent stall-holders Permanent stall holders have half-an-hour (after the market start up time) to turn up and claim their spots. There are at present 13 permanent stall holders. At the moment we are no longer taking on any more permanent stall holders. However, in the future if the situation changes casual stall holders will be informed by the market manager. The criteria for selection of new permanent stall holders include: trading regularly throughout the whole year, product type and adherence to the rules.
9. No buskers or Loud Music Please Busking is not permitted in the area of the BBCNM at any time under Council regulations and licensing laws. This is a residential area and no one is permitted to generate sound louder than 5dBA over background noise levels.
10. Public Health Laws These must be complied with when trading in the market place - i.e. no food and drink sales or alcohol are permitted. No animals, dogs, livestock etc are to be kept on-site (with the exception of guide dogs).
Bondi Beach Community Night Market is a non-profit organisation, run by a committee - which employs a manager. One free stall is available for local charities. The market operates on the principles of non-violence: intimidation, threats or harm to others will not be tolerated. Failure to adhere to the terms of the BBCNM rules and regulations will terminate your trading rights and you will be told to leave. All disputes will be dealt with by the manager, with the full backing of the committee. If you have any problems, queries or suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact the current committee members: Andrew, Adrian, Avishai, Barbara, Christine, David, Julian, Kirstie, Marc, Robin, Viola and Wen.
